Sustainable Bioenergy

A big challenge when it comes to bioenergy in the region is to ensure that the bioenergy production is performed in a sustainable way.

Sustainable Bioenergy

In this project we work for the development of sustainable systems for production and use of biomass for energy in the Baltic Sea Region.

Sustainability involves ecological, economic and social issues and implies a responsible use of natural resources. A sustainable system is managed in a way that maintains biodiversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, vitality and the potential to meet present and future generations need for ecological, economic and social functions.

In the Baltic Sea Region, only a small fraction of potential biomass resources are used for energy purposes as far as today. However, the interest is increasing as a result of new policies following the increasing awareness of the threatening effects of climate change. The objective of the project is to provide guidance and support leading to the development of policy measures that promote a sustainable production, supply and use of biomass for energy.
