The theme of the workshop will be ‘Bioenergy in Action’. North Karelia is the leading European region in the wood based bioenergy production and consumption. In the region, 70% of all heat and electricity produced comes from sustainably managed forest resources. There are numerous bioenergy entrepreneurships in the region. Therefore, during the workshop there will be a visit to the Eno Energy Cooperative on Thursday, 5th November 2009. Participants will see energy wood harvesting, chipping, transportation, heating plant, storage and heat entrepreneurship. This will provide food for thoughts on the following day of the workshop. There will be also visits to the Mekrijärvi Pellet Heating Station and Vapo Oy (Integrated CHP and Pellet Factory in Ilomantsi) on Friday, 6th November 2009.
The tentative participation fee is 400 Euros for each participant. This will cover the accommodation for three nights (4th-6th November), local transportation, and food. Participants are encouraged to pay by cash while they are registering at the Mekrijärvi Research Station. We will not send any invoice in advance! There are facilities for accommodating 40-45 persons at the Mekrijärvi Research Station and if the number of participants increases then we need to organize separate accommodation for some others. Joensuu is well connected by rail and air from Helsinki. It takes about one hour by plane from Helsinki to Joensuu, whereas it takes around 4 hours 45 minutes by train. All the participants are encouraged to arrive Joensuu on 4th November evening or late afternoon and leave from the Mekrijärvi Research Station on 7th November morning. Local transportation will be arranged for all the transfers.
